
This article analyzes the ideological conceptions of the inhabitants of Medellin, Colombia, regarding the implementation of neoliberal economic policies in the country. In-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted to 41 residents from Medellin, who identified politically with right-wing or center-right postures. The data analysis included thematic coding in order to identify patterns of thought and ideological representation. Participants associate success with personal effort and view State intervention as a hurdle to development. They reject redistributive policies, by arguing that they create dependency. Additionally, they justify authoritarian models of government on behave of security and social order. A negative perception of progressive sectors and a catastrophic view of public policies with social purpose were identified.
