The article presents the results of a qualitative research with a hermeneutic approach, in the modality of state of the art. It takes as its starting point the marked interest that the sui generis nature of the Peace Community of San José de Apartadó (Colombia) has generated among researchers at both national and international levels, due to its commitment to building peace autonomously and in tension with the State amid the war. The objective was to understand the meanings and tensions that the territory and territorial peace acquire in the research on the Peace Community of San José de Apartadó, as a basis for contributing to the conceptualization of territorial peace. It is concluded that territorial peace is a situated challenge, which goes beyond the limits set by the State, and it is consolidated in the experience of struggle and organization, which, in expressions like the Peace Community, have proposed other ways of relating to and inhabiting the territory.
